Which organizations are allowed to be sponsored?

In order to be considered at a meeting, the organization must be based in Kodiak, Alaska.  Recipients are expected to be 501(c)(3) organizations; however, special needs that do not meet this criterion may also be considered by the group as long as the tax status is disclosed before voting.  No national or international charities, programs or organizations will be considered as the purpose is for the contributions to stay 100% in the community.

 

What is a 501(c)(3)?

A 501(c)(3) is defined as "exemptions that apply to corporations, and any community chest, fund or foundation, organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, testing for public safety, literary, educational purposes, to foster national or international amateur sports competition, promote the arts, or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals."  However, for the purposes of 100+ Women Who Care all groups up for consideration must be local. 

 

Is my contribution tax deductible?

Yes, your contribution is tax deductible if made payable to a 501(c) (3) organization. Checks are written DIRECTLY to the local organization NOT to 100+ Women Who Care.  Please contact your tax adviser or visit the IRS Website for further information.

 

How is the organization that receives the donation chosen?

A member who has signed the Commitment Form (and is current on donations) can nominate a local organization at least 2 days before the meeting. The organizers will collect all nominations and randomly draw three names from a hat the day before the meeting. The members who nominated each of the three organizations will be asked to come up and give a short 5 minute presentation as to why their chosen organization should receive the donation and for Q & A.  We encourage members to participate by submitting the name of an organization special to them -- your willingness to present could result in the group's funds directly impacting the organization! Once an organization is chosen it will not be considered again for 12 months.

 

What if I cannot attend a meeting?

If a member cannot attend a meeting, she can do one of two things:  

1) She can send in a blank, signed check written out for $100 with 100+ WWC Kodiak on the memo line with a trusted friend to the meeting. The friend will write in the name of the charity that is chosen on the check and give it to the organizers on her behalf. The friend may NOT vote on behalf of the absent member.

2) She can mail in a blank, signed check written out for $100 with 100+ WWC Kodiak on the memo line via USPS directly to the organizer as far before the meeting as possible to ensure that her donation will be bundled with the attendees' contributions and deposited by the charity in a timely manner. Can I just send my donation directly to the charity?

No, the goal of the 100+ Women Who Care organization is to make a large donation on behalf of the whole group. We want to be able to support this endeavor and give $10,000+ dollars at a time to make a large impact in our community, with each member's donation being part of the larger donation.

 

How long do the meetings last?

Meetings are intended to be very short, generally lasting approximately 1 hour.  However, you may come to the meeting early in order to spend some time socializing, networking and getting to know other members. 

 

Can I bring a friend to the meeting?

Of course you can!  However, in order to vote she will need to sign a Commitment Form and become a member before voting at the meeting.

 

How long has 100+ WWC been in Kodiak?

We are just starting and you have a chance to be there from the beginning! 100+ Women Who Care Kodiak was founded in August 2015. We anticipate our first meeting to take place in October 2015.

Lynnette Anderson Wood and Jennie Schauff are the co-founders of 100+ WWC Kodiak chapter.  They have been lifelong friends for 30 years, graduating from Kodiak High School in 1989.  They welcome you to join them, in caring and supporting Kodiak, in this powerful way!
